Our Beginning
At the heart of Ona
Ona & Co began with our three little ones, who inspired us to start this journey and have been part of it ever since. As Ona grew, we became increasingly particular about the products we wanted to create, especially the ingredients we use, the cuts we choose and how they are prepared.
Our philosophy is simple: We believe in creating products that are simple and practical, without compromising on quality. No unnecessary gimmicks and no shortcuts.
We use real, whole food ingredients and thoughtfully select the cuts that go into our products. From carefully selected meats to whole seafood, we choose ingredients for their quality, nutrition and suitability for pets, including many of the same cuts we humans would happily enjoy ourselves.
Ona has grown a lot since we first started, and we're grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey with us. There's still so much we want to explore and create, and we're excited to see where Ona takes us next.
Made In House
For the treats we make today, we've chosen to keep the entire production process in-house rather than outsource it to an OEM manufacturer.
Every batch is made by our own team in our AVS licensed production facility in Singapore. From selecting our ingredients and deciding how they should be prepared, to freeze drying, quality checks and packing, we stay closely involved at every step.
Keeping the process in our own hands allows us to make thoughtful decisions at every stage and maintain the standards we set for every batch.
Every step involves a choice. Here’s how we approach each one.
Ingredient & Cut Selection
Choosing the right ingredient, not simply the most expensive.
We consider the balance of protein, fat, texture, and how each ingredient will perform once freeze dried.
For example, a richer, higher fat cut may be prized for human dining, but it isn't necessarily the best choice for a freeze dried treat. Freeze drying removes moisture, but not fat, which can result in an oilier finished product that is more susceptible to oxidation over time.
Preparation
Prepared according to the ingredient.
Different ingredients call for different preparation. We consider the characteristics of each one and determine how it should be trimmed, cut or kept whole before freeze drying.
There is no one size fits all approach, we prepare each ingredient in the way that suits it best, without unnecessary processing.
Freeze Drying
Freeze dried in our own facility.
Once prepared, the ingredients are frozen and freeze dried under vacuum to remove moisture while retaining much of their natural appearance, colour, texture and flavour.
As every ingredient is different, we adjust our freeze drying process to suit the product and ensure each batch is thoroughly dried.
Quality Check
Checked before anything goes into a pouch.
Completing a freeze drying cycle doesn't automatically mean a batch is ready.
Every batch is carefully checked by hand to ensure the treats are thoroughly dried and meet our standards before they are approved for packing.
Thoughtful Packaging
Even our packaging has a purpose.
Our packaging is designed with both freshness and transparency in mind.
Most of the pouch is opaque to help reduce exposure to light, while a small window gives you a peek at the actual treats inside, because we know pawrents like to see what they're feeding.
The materials we use are also selected to help protect the treats from moisture, oxygen and light during storage.
Final Checks
One last check before it leaves us.
Once packed, every product goes through a final check before it is ready to leave our facility.
From the ingredient we choose to the pouch you receive, the process stays in our hands.
